While the rest of Karnataka reeled under severe drought for three years since 2002, one village carried on with its farming activities as usual. For farmers at Kakola — a non-descript village, off the Bangalore-Pune highway in Haveri district — shortage of rainfall is not a problem.

The Karnataka government has spent crores of rupees of World Bank funds for many years now,but the exercise has barely created any Kakolas.So it needs no mention that it was not the government's initiative that made Kakola what it is.

The water table which had sunk below 500-600 feet in the village has risen so dramatically as to be found at 100-120 feet.

Deer and black bucks,not seen before in the area,have come in large numbers finding the place secure enough to roam about with no predators-man or animal-on trail.
